Skin fade or taper fade: the difference

A skin fade takes the sides and back right down to bare skin at the bottom, then blends up into the length on top. It is the sharper of the two, with the cleanest contrast between the sides and the top.

A taper fade is softer. The hair at the neckline and around the ears is cut very short but not to the skin, and the blend happens over a smaller area. It grows out more gently and suits anyone who wants a tidy, natural look without the bare-skin edge.

Low, mid or high: how to ask for what you want

Low, mid and high describe where the fade starts. A low fade sits just above the ear and neckline, a mid fade begins around the temple, and a high fade climbs close to the top of the head. Higher means more contrast; lower keeps more hair on the sides.

You do not need the exact vocabulary. Tell us how short you want the bottom, how much length to keep on top, and whether you want the top left natural, shaped or lined up. A photo helps, and our gallery is a good place to find one. If you are not sure what will suit you, ask us and we will talk it through first.

Adding a beard or a design

Pairing a fade with beard work in one visit means the lines match. Skin Fade + Beard is £27. If you only want the beard tidied, a Beard Trim & Shape is £12 on its own, and there is more on our beard trims page.
